A WHOPPING $197 million funding injection to further revitalise central Dandenong over 20 years has transformed the undertaking into one of Australia’s largest urban renewal projects.
Premier Steve Bracks announced the funding windfall as part of the Community Cabinet visit to Dandenong yesterday (Wednesday), alongside $20 million for train station improvements announced by Transport Minister Peter Batchelor.
The funds will be used for several major projects including converting Lonsdale Street’s traffic conditions and making the strip less of a dividing line between the two sides of the trade precinct; creating the City Walk – a direct link from Dandenong station to the heart of Dandenong; and beautifying the district with small parks and improved public spaces.
“It will create and estimated 5000 jobs, attract more than $1 billion in private sector investment, create quality affordable housing options, and provide transport and traffic solutions in addition to improving the precinct’s appearance and amenity,” Mr Bracks said.
Major Projects Minister John Lenders said the funding would also allow for crucial land acquisition to build the works.
The State Government is hoping the new projects will attract the private sector to Dandenong.
The funding is in addition to last year’s $92.8 million announcement, and Mr Bracks said VicUrban had been appointed to oversee the project.
Dandenong Residents’ and Ratepayers’ Association president Jim Houlahan welcomed the announcements, but said they should have “no strings attached”.
“Without looking at the detail, the concept sounds very good, but the dollars should be spent purely to assist Dandenong’s revitalisation, and if it’s as plain and simple as that, the concept sounds very attractive.”
Mr Houlahan said it was important VicUrban did not bypass council and community input by answering only to the State Government.
Meanwhile, Mr Batchelor announced a $20 million improvement to train stations including Dandenong and Noble Park.
Eastlink partner ConnectEast will provide the funds for improvements to car parking at Dandenong station, with upgraded lighting for the Dandenong and Noble Park stations, and a weather-proof shelter at Noble Park station.
