HAIR today, gone tomorrow.
Curing leukaemia may not be as simple, but after raising $2000 towards research into the deadly disease, students at Noble Park’s Wallarano Primary School enjoyed watching several staff, including their principal, have their heads shaved.
Assistant principal Gail Doney said students were recently challenged to raise the $2000 in order to see principal David Duff, assistant principal Paul Garden and information and communication technology technician Colin Palmer lose their cherished locks.
“The school has rallied together, purchasing wristbands provided by the Leukaemia Foundation and badges with images of what David, Paul and Colin will look like bald,” she said.
“The school raised $2168 and students have a greater awareness of this terrible disease and have been provided with an excellent opportunity to realise that important contributions can be made to the community, even at a very young age.”
Last Friday, the school invited several hairdressers to conduct the shave, and to celebrate the occasion students coloured and styled their hair, the school held a sausage sizzle, and the school choir performed.
Mr Duff said he was willing to lose his hair to teach students empathy.
“The benefits for students, as well as the foundation, will be worth having my head shaved as my hair will grow back,” he said.
“Unfortunately, people suffering from leukaemia have to endure far more difficult challenges.”
