GREATER Dandenong Council will open its Thomas Street multi-level car park this Friday in response to a push by local businesses to increase night parking during busy periods.
The move comes just days before the new Pulse Tavern nightclub and bar opens on the corner of Thomas and Walker streets.
Dandenong Ward councillor Jim Memeti said there would be parking fees to cover opening costs but the12-week trial was expected to address traders’ concerns over a lack of parking in the street.
“The car park will remain open until 3am on Saturday morning and will remain open until 3am on Sunday morning,” he said.
“There will be a flat-rate charge of $5 for parking in the period from 7.30pm Friday up until 3am Saturday and from 5pm Saturday until 3am Sunday.”
Cr Memeti said the car park would help foster trade in central Dandenong as more night facilities opened.
“The decision to extend parking hours is vital for local traders, particularly as there is so much more happening in Dandenong with a range of new restaurants and entertainment venues including the Drum Theatre.”
