THE Parkmore Pirates won their second match of the Southern Football League Division Three season, defeating South Mornington by eight points at Citation Oval on Saturday.
Full-forward Danny Casset was again the star for Parkmore, booting 10 of the Pirates’ 12 goals.
South Mornington had three more scoring shots than Parkmore in the first quarter, but trailed by seven points at the first break.
Casset was unstoppable and proved too hard to handle for the South Mornington defence.
At three-quarter time Parkmore led by just four points.
But inaccurate goal-kicking from South Mornington in the final term allowed the Pirates to steer themselves towards a narrow win.
The Tigers had seven more scoring shots than the Pirates, but kicked 9.16 – a conversion rate unlikely to win many games.
Peter Knott played a stellar game for the Pirates and Dandenong Demon recruit Jayde Handfield again proved himself as a versatile player.
This match was a test of the Pirates’ resolve and a definite indicator of how much the side has improved.
The future looks bright at Wachter Reserve.
If the Parkmore midfielders can continue supplying Casset with the football and full-back Terry McKinley can make kicking goals hard for the opposition, the Pirates are well on their way to Division Three success.
On Saturday, the Pirates return to Wachter Reserve to play league newcomer Skye, which suffered its first loss of the season last week, beaten at Mt Waverley by 13 points.
