IT was a feline frenzy in Keysborough last Sunday as the Australian Animal Protection Society held a Cat Day for people to adopt a furry friend for as little as $40.
All of the cats on offer were strays, but the 40 that were purchased were spared the fate of 30,000 of their brothers and sisters who are destroyed in Victoria each year.
Cat liaison Viv Williams declared the day a success, and said 1000 people passed through the shelter’s doors.
But she said there was a need for the mandatory desexing of cats to counteract the population blow-out that led to the large loss of feline life.
Ms Williams said the society had labelled the high-volume destruction of cats a ‘cat-astrophe’ and held the Cat Day to promote cat ownership.
There was a petition to sign on the day as part of the group’s bid to have desexing made mandatory.
