FIFTEEN lucky Noble Park schoolchildren will attend the Commonwealth Games next month after their school won tickets.
Wallarano Primary School physical education teacher Helen Lester entered a Safeway competition at the end of last year and her written application was chosen as one of the winning entries, with 15 students and two teachers set to watch day two of the athletics on 19 March.
Students in grades five and six at the school were given the chance to put themselves up for nomination, with the 15 announced at a grade five/six assembly last Friday.
“They were rapt, they were very excited,” Ms Lester said.
“They’re all pretty keen to see what goes on at the Games and get involved in it.”
But Ms Lester said she would not be one of the teachers going to the event.
“I won’t be around that weekend. I’d already booked for something else,” she said.
“I’m really disappointed. I’ll have to plan it better next time.”
She said the teachers attending, Art teacher Chris Vrondou and Teacher’s Aide Katie Brennan, had been drawn out of a hat and were very excited.
Ms Lester said that in the application she had talked about the school’s involvement within the school and wider community, and out-of-school events such as Interschool sports and singing.
“Coming from this area, Noble Park, a lot of the students wouldn’t normally get the opportunity to go (to the Games) or the parents couldn’t afford to go,” she said.
