SPORTS, games and dancing were on offer at Springvale’s 2006 Cultural Games last week when the community celebrated both the Commonwealth Games and Cultural Diversity Week.
City of Greater Dandenong residents came out in force last Tuesday to unite the area’s culturally and linguistically diverse community in a day of sport and recreation.
The event was organised by the Springvale Community Aid and Advice Bureau (SCAAB), Springvale Community Centre and Springvale Neighbourhood House as well as community volunteers.
SCAAB project coordinator Hulya Akguner said: “The 2006 Cultural Games used the universal link of recreation and sport to celebrate people’s cultures while strengthening understanding and respect for each other as people.”
The day was a big hit with a variety of games and sports popular with different cultures from wrestling demonstrations from the Oromo community to table-tennis competitions.
There was plenty on offer for the kids with puppet-making workshops and Mexican music and Spanish classical guitar for the parents.
Guests learnt about the history of the Commonwealth Games, as well as traditions and sports of many different cultures, with displays around the Neighbourhood House and Community Centre.
