LOCAL Sudanese girls had the chance to strut their stuff in a oneoff Myer fashion show training day last week.
The training program, at Springvale Community Centre, was a chance for the girls to learn the trade from the experts.
Springvale Community Centre coordinator Elena Sheldon said she had been to a community business event last year and was talking about what they did at the centre when a Myer representative approached her about the program.
“The girls were really excited about it. They learnt quite a lot,” Ms Sheldon said. She said about 20 girls took part the program last Thursday 19 January from 10am to 3pm.
The program covered event planning, roles and workshops for the fashion show teams, stage, lighting, music, garments, makeup and modelling.
Each participant brought samples of their favourite African and popular music as well as two favourite outfits – one African and one modern.
“It was all quite exciting,” Ms Sheldon said. “There were great colours and garments.
“Some of them are quite passionate about this.
Apart from the fashion side it was a good experience of meeting people.
“It gave the girls some great leadership skills and motivation.”
Ms Sheldon said it had been a great way for the centre to start the new year.
She said Myer representatives might come back to the centre in a few months to continue the training.
The girls were also planning a small performance at the Australia Day welcome barbecue for the South Sudanese community in Noble Park today (Thursday).
