DANDENONG Cricket Club legend Graeme Way loves his cricket.
But the 68yearold Dandenong resident has never bowled a competitive ball in his life.
“I’m hopeless at playing the game but I just love it and love being involved,” he said.
Graeme has filled numerous roles and thrives on providing his services to the club he has followed for most of his life.
“I have done a number of things,” he said.
“I was scorer until my eyesight deteriorated, now I operate the scoreboard.
“It keeps me busy.”
Having watched countless players come and go from the club, Graeme said the current list was a good balance of young and mature.
“There can’t be too many young ones, the team needs some experience, but the team is well balanced.”
Graeme said strike bowler Peter Siddle would play a crucial role in the club’s success this season and he loved watching 16yearold Kumar Sana belt the bowlers around Shepley Oval.
“Kumar has developed quite a bit in the past year,” he said.
“I watched him hit some big sixes against some class upstate bowlers on Saturday.”
Graeme said the club had a number of potential worldbeaters on its list but the youngsters had to remain focused.
“There are a lot of distractions at that age but the youngsters playing have plenty of potential,” he said.
Graeme expects the firsts to notch up a number of wins this season but said St Kilda would be hard to stop.
“There is a lot of talent and experience in the St Kilda side,” he said.
“They’re the team to watch out for.”
