A KEYSBOROUGHbased business is leading the Australian printing industry in environmental management.
Southern Colour, in the Southern Business Park in Keysborough, was recently awarded a Forest Stewarship Council (FSC) Accreditation as a member of the chain of custody.
Southern Colour managing director Rod Dawson said the accreditation was the first given to an Australian printer and it was a step in the right direction for the printing industry to offer products made with the least harm to the environment.
“In the past six months we acquired an ISO14001, which recognised our standard in environmental management,” he said. “It looks at how you recycle chemicals, paper, plastics, etcetera. The FSC Accreditation is the next step.”
Mr Dawson said the ISO accreditation was ‘rigid’ and looked at fine detail such as where employees put lunch wrappers.
But the FSC Accreditation makes the company an accredited Chain of Custody member, meaning it will always be included in the production of FSCaccredited products bearing the FSC logo.
The accreditation will not only reflect well on the company’s commitment to the environment, but will also offer its clients the opportunity to enhance their social conscience, Mr Dawson said.
“It gives our clients the ability to demonstrate their commitment to environmentally and socially responsible forest management, and label their products with the soughtafter FSC trademarks,” he said.
Southern Colour prints anything from brochures and newsletters through to commercial runs of catalogues, and Mr Dawson said Southern Colour was now looking towards local businesses to build its client base.
“One thing we are keen to grow is our business in the local area,” he said.”
“We don’t just do large commercial runs, we also do stationery, so if they want to have material printed they can give us a call.”
The company has been in its Keysborough location for five years after it was bought out by Mr Dawson and several other investors, who have since turned the company around to become an industry leader.
