THERE was a competitive edge in the air on Tuesday when two teams went head to head in the exservicemen’s 55 and over billiards and snooker finals at the Dandenong RSL.
But the competition held a twist as Dandenong RSL provided both finalists with their Team One facing off against their Team Two.
Barry Mathers of the Dandenong RSL said the competition had been tough, with Dandenong one winning by one frame.
“It was four frames each so they played another game and Team One ended up winning,” he said.
Mr Mathers said it was the first time in the competition’s 25year history that two teams from the same club had reached the final.
“It is a 12team competition and we played nine other RSL clubs including Clayton, Mitcham, Ringwood, Boronia, Burwood and Montmorency.
“It is a 22round competition with three preliminary finals and then the grand final,” he said.
The finals attracted about 50 with players aged between 55 and 80.
“Many of the men really enjoy playing billiards and snooker but most games are at night,” he said
“Particularly for the older players this is a bit much and they really enjoy coming in during the day and having a game at the RSL.
“Things were terribly competitive on Tuesday but it was all good natured.
“Everyone had a good time and it was great to see,” he said.
