STUDENTS from Springvale South Primary School put technological theory into practice as a Billycart Derby wrapped up term three on Friday.
Grade three and four students were put in teams and required to come up with their own designs for vehicles.
Minimodels were built with skewer wheels and straws before the ideas and concepts were constructed into fullsize billycarts in time for the derby.
School spokesperson Carmel Nigro said the development of technology skills and teamwork was a high priority.
“Working together as a team towards the common goal required students to demonstrate a variety of skills in making their billycarts,” she said.
“They had to problemsolve, design and utilise the skills of modification to ensure that their vehicle was roadworthy.”
During Friday’s derby the school oval was transformed into a racecourse where teams participated in time trials and obstacle races, pushing their machines to the limit.
