DANDENONG’S Walker Street Gallery is preparing to host an art competition for male artists.
Titled He Who Belongs, the exhibition will run in September and showcase works from new and established artists.
Winners of the exhibition prizes awarded by Maroondah Art Gallery and Kingston Art Centre will be announced on the opening night.
Gallery coordinator Cathy van Ee said the competition focused on the theme of belonging, but from a male perspective.
“In trying to capture the meaning of belonging, fascinating and wonderful interpretations have emerged of figure and landscape, land ownership, portrayals of introspection and vulnerability, stories of loss, pain, revenge and loneliness,” she said.
“Some describe belonging as a celebration of life and the delight of personal exploration. Others bravely explore male nurturing, male grief, and men’s place within the family.”
Ms van Ee said the exhibition would be thought-provoking and would challenge the imagination.
The official opening of the exhibition will be on 7 September at 6.30pm.
Viewing times will be 11am to 5pm Monday to Friday, and 11am to 3pm on Saturdays.
