IMAGINE a United Nations convention rising to perform a Russian polka dance.
The multicultural day at Dandenong West Primary School last Tuesday was exactly that with up to 200 students going to school in the traditional clothing of their countries of origin.
While it looked like a gathering of nations, there was no disputing that kids from any ethnic background are just kids, with all enjoying a Russian polka, German dance and Australian dance.
School publicity officer and teacher Gail Winada said students were also encouraged to bring traditional food relating to their countries of origin.
“The students mostly came in national dress, we have a lot of kids who are Afghani, Indian or Sri Lankan,” she said.
Africa and Asia were also well represented and the lunchtime feast consisted of rice, noodle, and curry dishes.
Ms Winada said the day was part of a week-long National Literacy and Numeracy Week celebration held by the school.
