CENTRAL Dandenong is expected to receive an influx of young people with a new nightclub targeting patrons of a recently closed Fountain Gate nightclub.
The Nu Hotel in Scott Street is this Friday opening its first-floor nightclub, Club Pulse, for the first time since the mid-1990s.
Capitalising on the closure of the Furnace Nite Club in Fountain Gate, the hotel has managed to secure popular cover band Adam 12 as its main act for every forthcoming Friday night.
Nu Hotel manager Steve Amundsen said the club had used SMS to contact 30,000 young people on nightclub databases to notify them of the club’s launch.
He said Furnace’s closure had “presented an opportunity” for the hotel to open its first floor, which will hold up to 760 patrons.
Furnace Nite Club, as reported in last week’s Star, closed after a long history of violence, sexual assault and liquor licence breaches.
But Mr Amundsen, who said he had been in the hospitality industry for a long time, was confident the Nu Hotel would avoid the troubles that plagued the Fountain Gate club.
“I really don’t see how it will be any different from any other area throughout Melbourne, so no, I don’t expect there to be any undue problems,” he said.
“We will certainly have adequate security.”
Mr Amundsen said club management, under the City of Greater Dandenong Liquor Accord, was working with police and the council to prevent the behavioural and alcohol-related problems often associated with nightclubs.
The signing of the popular Furnace cover band Adam 12 is a coup for Club Pulse, with legions of followers expected to travel to central Dandenong – just 10 minutes from Fountain Gate – to continue their support.
“Adam 12 has played for a number of years or certainly for a long while,” Mr Amundsen said.
“They’ve built up a very strong following. They’re arguably one of the top three cover bands in Melbourne at the moment.”
Friday nights at Club Pulse will kick off from 9pm.
