THE Kiwanis Club of Dingley is preparing for its next big fundraising event for children with heart problems.
A garage and car boot sale will be held at the Dingley Village Neighbourhood Centre on Sunday, 16 October.
The club took on Heartkids as its district project in 2003, and members have since dedicated their time to raising money for families dealing with the problems associated with heartrelated illnesses.
Margi Gray from the club said the money was put towards facilities for families at hospitals where children with heart conditions were treated.
“One in every 100 children has a heart problem,” she said.
“Heart disease in children is the leading cause of child death in Australia, accounting for more than 30 per cent of all child deaths.”
Ms Gray said many people didn’t know about the work of Kiwanis, despite it being the world’s third largest international service club.
“Our motto is ‘Serving the Children of the World’ and our purpose is to give ill and disadvantaged children a better quality of life.
“We take great pride in serving our communities and we reach out to those in need in many ways.”
The Dingley club provides hearing tests for preschoolers, Terrific Kids awards for hardworking primary school students and ‘baby bundles’ for the needy at Monash Medical Centre
It also buys gifts for elderly people at agedcare hostels and nursing homes at Christmas, Mother’s Day and Father’s Day.
Fundraising activities include drinks and hot dogs stalls at the Dingley Craft Market on the first Sunday of the month, a statewide raffle and a recent rock ‘n’ roll night.
The garageboot sale will be held at the Dingley Village Neighbourhood Centre, Marcus Road, Dingley.
It costs $20 to book a site. For details, phone Margi Gray on 9512 5821 or 0412 978 455.
The Kiwanis Club Dingley meets on the second and fourth Tuesday of the month at Dingley International Hotel from 7pm.
