AN arson attack and a lucky escape capped off a busy week for Greater Dandenong firefighters.
Police have called in an arson specialist to the scene in Noble Park after the blaze destroyed an unoccupied house earlier this week.
The property at 1206 Heatherton Road was gutted, and police are calling for witnesses to the fire as it appeared to have been deliberately lit.
Occupants of a car travelling past the house alerted emergency services to the blaze after noticing smoke coming from the roof about 1.30am on Monday, 6 February.
The house had been vacant for 14 months, and police believe the fire started in the front of the home.
Fire crews from Noble Park and Dandenong, who attended the fire, were concerned the old house may have been ridden with asbestos.
Dandenong Pumper and Noble Park Pumper and Salvage units attended the scene.
Later that evening, Dandenong firefighters were called to another residential fire, this time at Sunline Avenue, Dandenong North, about 11.10pm.
Firefighters at the scene said a singlestorey brick veneer home was heavily damaged, and neighbours were initially concerned for the safety of a married couple and their young daughter, but it was later discovered that they were not in the house.
