WHETHER it was the six million letters rushing before their young eyes, or the goldfish in the pond, something brought smiles to the faces of the children from Sandown Park Kindergarten last week.
Sandown Park Kindergartern kids, teachers and parents took an educational tour of the Australia Post Dandenong Letters Centre in Nathan Road, Dandenong, last week.
The kindergarten crew learned how mail was processed at the Dandenong site and even posted their own letters while there.
Dandenong Letters Centre executive assistant Joan Barry guided the kindergarten kids on a tour. She said the massive warehouse-style site sorted about six million letters a day and up to 12 million during Christmas.
But the kids absorbed the logistical marvel on a different level, viewing it more like an industrial amusement park. Robots sorted mail, conveyor belt systems resembled rollercoasters, and there was a path to help guide the kinder around the attractions.
Sandown Park Kindergarten teacher Gurbiner Bhatia said prior to the tour the children wrote letters and addressed them to their dads to mail out for Fathers’ Day.
Each child wrote ‘To Daddy’ on their envelopes, placed their own stamp on the letter, and mailed it to their dads during the tour.
But arguably the highlight of the day – at least for the kids – was Australia Post’s own pond, swarming with large goldfish and protected by nets to stop ibises swooping down for an easy feed.
