GREATER Dandenong’s World Refugee Day festival was a celebration fit for royalty when a plethora of fun activities hit The Castle youth venue this week.
Several of the city’s major refugee services groups banded together on Tuesday with help from the City of Greater Dandenong, City of Casey and Victoria Police to host activities aimed at creating a friendly and welcoming environment for Australia’s newest arrivals.
A halal barbecue courtesy of the Lions Club of Dandenong kick started the day, with a puppet show, hip-hop dancing, an African fashion parade, Brazilian drumming, Aboriginal dance, sports including soccer and skating demonstrations rounding off an action packed day.
Services and community groups who organised the game were The Centre for Multicultural Youth Issues, City of Greater Dandenong’s youth services team, Noble Park Youth Centre, MUSO Network, Southern Ethnic Advisory and Advocacy Council, School Focused Youth Services, The Migrant Resource Centre, Foundation House, Reconnect, and Centrelink.
