WALLARANO Primary School students are achieving better results than most of the state despite their classification as being harder to teach.
Assistant principal Gail Doney said the State Government labelled Wallarano a classification nine school because its students were from areas of high unemployment and where English was a second language.
But this week’s announcement that the school won a National Numeracy and Literacy Week Award for its English and maths programs was the fifth time in the past seven years Wallarano has been commended, Ms Doney said.
Ms Doney said the school rated higher than the state average in areas of numeracy and literacy because of its approach to teaching.
“We have three leading teachers who mentor our teachers and track how well the children are going,” she said.
Ms Doney said the leading teachers were dedicated to mentoring and did not teach classes.
“We have a leading teacher each for literacy, numeracy and assessment and reporting,” she said.
Federal Isaacs MP Ann Corcoran awarded a $5000 cheque to Wallarano Primary School principal David Duff on Monday for its win.
National Literacy and Numeracy Week runs from 28 August to 3 September.
