
FIREFIGHTERS contained a small electrical fire that broke out in one Greater Dandenong’s oldest churches.
On Sunday morning parishioners at St James Anglican Church in Langhorne Street, Dandenong, smelt smoke during their service and called the Country Fire Authority (CFA) before evacuating the building.
Fire crews from Dandenong, Hallam and Springvale rushed to the scene contained the fire at the church before it caused any damage.
CFA photographer Keith Pakenham said the fire started in old electrical wiring near the church’s roof.
He said firefighters isolated the power and used small batches of water to extinguish the fire.
“Springvale brigade responded their Thermal Imaging Camera to confirm the fire had not entered roof and wall cavities,” he said.
St James Anglican Church is within the Heritage Hill historic precinct and was built in 1864.
