Students step up to learn

SCHOOLS in Dandenong have been invited to take part in Walktober next month in a bid to encourage children to walk to school.
South Eastern Metropolitan MP Gordon-Rich Phillips said Walktober would be held on 22 October.
“Children should be encouraged and applauded for walking to school, as it is paramount in building good physical and mental health,” Mr Rich-Phillips said.
“Walking to school will also ease the expenditure on petrol and relieve commuters of traffic congestion on our roads.
“There are many benefits to walking, and since it can be part of our daily routine, walking should be an activity that is endorsed by both adult and child.
“The two schools that demonstrate the greatest increase in the proportion of student population walking to school on ‘Walktober’ walk to school day, compared with the prior day, will win the Golden Shoe Award for one year.”
