A SPRINGVALE couple received an unexpected visitor on Saturday, when a Toyota Seca sedan leaving a petrol station smashed through their fence and into their house at approximately 3.15pm.
CFA Volunteer firefighter Keith Pakenham said the car left the petrol station, went through a garden bed damaging a water meter, crossed a side street and then went through a wooden paling fence before crushing an air-conditioning unit and damaging the side of the house at the corner of Springvale Road and Mackay Street.
A fire crew from nearby Springvale Fire Station and an ambulance responded and assisted the female driver.
Springvale Fire Brigade Fire Officer Robert Benning said the Vietnamese driver, believed to be in her 30s, told police through an interpreter that her foot slipped off the brake onto the accelerator.
The occupants were home at the time of the incident, but were unharmed. Mr Benning said the accident was the third in two years at the Springvale property, but this was the first time that a vehicle had hit the house.
Mr Benning said the corner of Springvale Road and Mackay Street was not hazardous and dangerous drivers were to blame for the accidents.
“At the fire brigade we teach drivers to concentrate on what you’re doing, it’s simple,” he said.
“It’s about observation and concentration. You are the driver, you’re in control.”
