POLICE are warning residents to be wary of salespeople knocking on their doors.
Detective Senior Constable Stuart Freeman said residents should not let salespeople into their home unless they carried appropriate identification.
The warning follows an incident in Dandenong during which a 17-year-old girl was indecently assaulted.
Det Sen Const Freeman said the girl, who was home alone at the time, answered the door to a man who said he worked for a phone company and let him in.
“The man, whom she described of Indian appearance, said he was working for a phone company so she let him in,” he said. “He then touched her on the leg and continued to make unwanted advances.
“He also proceeded to touch her breasts.”
Det Freeman said the man left when he received a telephone call.
“He didn’t return,” he said.
While the man was not violent, Det Sen Const. Freeman said the girl was affected by the incident and the Sexual Offence Unit was investigating the incident.
“It is imperative that residents check the identifications before letting anyone into their homes,” he said.
“If they have concerns, don’t let them in and, if need be, call the agency they say they belong to.”
He said young people who felt uncomfortable about answering the door when home alone, should ask callers to leave a business card to be contacted at a later time.
“We don’t want to alarm people,” he said. “But we want people to use their initiative before letting people into their homes.
“We don’t want something like this to happen again.”
