GREATER Dandenong residents are invited to stand up for better public transport in the suburbs.
The Eastern Transport Coalition (ETC), which represents seven councils and advocates for sustainable transport services in the eastern region of Melbourne, has organised a ‘monster petition’ which is to be presented to state parliament.
The petition says: “The petition of residents and businesses in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne points out to the House that the Victorian Transport Plan does not make provision for the extension of much needed rail services and improved passenger facilities to Melbourne’s eastern suburbs.”
Councillors Roz Blades, Angela Long and Jim Memeti went to the Dandenong Market on Tuesday and were able to rack up more than 200 signatures in two hours.
“Residents should look out for the petition throughout the city for the next three weeks,” Cr Blades said.
“We are aiming to get 10,000 state-wide, which looks possible after people were lining up to sign today.”
To date signatures to the petition have been collected in the Monash and Whitehorse council areas. Greater Dandenong Council will host the petition for three weeks, commencing Monday, 31 August.
During the first week the petition will be available at the following locations: Monday, 31 August, at the council’s customer service centre. Tuesday, 1 September, Dandenong Market. Wednesday, 2 September, Dandenong Customer Service Centre. Thursday, 3 September, Dandenong Customer Service Centre. Friday, 4 September, Dandenong Customer Service Centre. Saturday, 5 September, Dandenong Library. Sunday, 6 September, Dandenong Library.
