Station artscape goes up

By Lia Bichel
A NEW art display splashed along the walls of the Dandenong Station pedestrian walkway will be viewed by thousands of people every day for the next two years.
The Viachroma installation, by Rowena Martinich, 29, took about a month to create.
“I am very excited to have my work in such a public place,” she said.
“It’s great to have so many people see my work.”
Dandenong MP John Pandazopoulos opened the new abstract art installation on Tuesday and said that the State Government funded initiative was an excellent example of how art could transform everyday environments such as train stations.
“Viachroma is an example of how we can work together to transform train stations and their surrounds into more attractive public spaces, but it is more than that. It shows how art can be used to encourage social connection and inclusion,” he said.
“Just as central Dandenong is undergoing dramatic changes as large sections of the business and retails areas are redeveloped, this artwork is changing the face of the station. By encouraging community pride in the station, we hope this will improve the transport experience, beautify the environment and encourage a safer area.”
