STATE league division three side Springvale South is going from strength to strength with the latest show of muscle being a 4-0 romping of North Caulfield at Warner Reserve on Sunday.
After huge wins over Mornington and Peninsula, South Springvale rolled North Caulfield in a destructive second half, but head coach Steve Voursoukis denies his team has turned into a powerhouse.
“We’ve only played three games. There are teams that we still need to play, so it’s too early to be talking about that,” said Voursoukis.
Samuel Catherine scored the first goal of the match but it was early in the second half that Aris stamped their authority.
Ilias Diniotis and Boris Karaga both scored early while substitute Ari Karanicolas slammed home an impressive 18-yard volley into the top corner to seal the win.
“It was a good game. The fellas responded when we were challenged,” said Voursoukis.
“Tactically we worked out our opposition in the second half. They were pushing numbers forward and we man-marked them then released our midfielders going into attack. We also put more pressure on their midfielders,” said Voursoukis.
Karaga was important for the South Springvale midfield and his goal demonstrates the scoring ability the side has.
“Boris (Karaga) is a defensive-type midfielder but our key strength at the moment is we can score goals from everywhere; strikers, midfielders, defenders, everyone,” Voursoukis said.
South Springvale faces their toughest test this season with a derby encounter scheduled against Kingston this week.
“They have a lot of experience and a lot of well payed players … it is going to be our acid test,” Voursoukis said.
In other division three matches, SPRINGVALE CITY recorded its first point of the season with a 3-3 draw against Brandon Park while NOBLE PARK extended its winning streak to two games with a 3-2 win over Mornington at Dallas Brooks Park.
In division one action the SPRINGVALE WHITE EAGLES kicked out after half time to beat Preston Lions 3-2 to record their second win for the season.
In division two DANDENONG CITY had a 2-0 win over the previously undefeated Morwell Pegasus at Frank Holohan Reserve, while the SOUTHERN STARS continued their unbeaten run this season by beating the Eastern Lions 0-2 at Gardiners Creek Reserve.
HEATHERTON UNITED also continued their trend of draws for the first three rounds of the season by finishing level with Berwick City 0-0 at Bosnia and Herzegovina Soccer Centre.
