THE Asian communities in Springvale are set to benefit from a new gateway and community space.
The Springvale Asian Business Association and Cambodian Association of Victoria will benefit from $255,000 in state funding, Minister Assisting the Premier on Multicultural Affairs James Merlino announced on Tuesday.
Up to $175,000 will be provided to the Springvale Asian Business Association for an Asian Gateway in Springvale’s shopping centre at the intersection of Buckingham Avenue and Windsor Avenue.
An additional $80,000 will go to the Cambodian Association for the expansion of its community space at 52 Queens Street in Springvale.
Mr Merlino said the government was working with dedicated community organisations and councils to preserve the state’s multicultural heritage by developing community infrastructure and cultural precincts through its $10 million Cultural Precincts and Community Infrastructure Fund.
“The funding provides an opportunity to partner with communities to develop innovative ideas and to make a mark on some of Victoria’s most vibrant precincts and facilities,” he said.
Member for Clayton Hong Lim said the funding was an extension of Cultural Precincts Enhancement Fund which focused on revitalising the CBD cultural precincts of the Greek, Italian and Chinese communities.
“Our Asian communities continue to play an active role in standing up for our reputation as a culturally and religiously diverse society that embraces rich cultural heritage,” Mr Lim said.
“Springvale is proud of its cultural links to the Asian community and our new cultural precinct will ensure the region remains a great asset.”
