They’re club of the week

By Nicole Williams
DOVETON Netball Club is the weekly winner of the ANZ Junior Club of the Week.
ANZ sponsors the grants, which support netball at a junior level by offering a weekly grant of $2500 to any Australian junior netball club during the ANZ Championship season.
Doveton Netball Club Secretary Sue Kovach said the grant would relieve the fund-raising pressure and would be well spent.
“Having the grant from the ANZ is absolutely brilliant – we love it!” Ms Kovach said.
“It’ll help get new uniforms and bibs and balls for the kids and we also have a first aid kit for every team.”
The 100-strong club is unique in that it helps subsidise anything that the players need, whether it is a uniform, shoes or socks.
“It will go towards all of that, everything that the kids need one way or another they get,” she said.
Ms Kovach said the club usually relied on fund-raising but the $2500 grant would take the pressure off.
“We don’t have to fund-raise as much so the pressure is off a bit.”
Captain of the Australian Netball Diamonds and ANZ Ambassador Sharelle McMahon said the grants provided much-needed funding.
“Community clubs are the lifeblood of the growth and development of the sport in Australia,” Ms McMahon said.
“This not only helps the clubs financially, but will assist the development of our up and coming netball stars.”
The ANZ Junior Club of the Week selects a new club each week of the season for the major grant and an additional 21 clubs will receive $500 as runner-ups.
