Don’t bash bogans says MP

DOVETON has been defended in Federal Parliament against slurs that it is full of mullet and moccasin bogans.
Federal Holt MP Anthony Byrne stood up for his suburb after it was identified as a hotbed of flannelette shirts and stubbie shorts in a new book.
“This is a great area to live, work and raise a family,” Mr Byrne said.
“I am sick of my area being trashed by outsiders who need a GPS to find out where Doveton, Fountain Gate, Cranbourne and Hampton Park are,” he told MPs.
The suburb has been identified as one of the country’s top 10 bogan suburbs in The Bogan Delusion, which was published last month.
In it author Melbourne academic Dr David Nichols says that the concept of the bogan is a class war myth created by people who need someone else to look down on.
“Let me tell you abut the Doveton I know,” Mr Byrne said in his speech. “It’s a suburb with character, a suburb with heart and a suburb with a sense of community spirit,” he said. “I know of the many warm and friendly community minded people that make Doveton a treasure of a suburb.”
Mr Byrne then listed the achievements of people in Doveton who had worked hard to improve the lives of people in the suburb.
