SHE came into the Cucchiara clan with luck on her side but it ran out last week for Lucky the kitten.
As reported by the Star in February, Lucky survived a two-kilometre journey in a car engine bay to become the newest addition of the Keysborough family.
But she was sadly killed by a car last Thursday.
Michael Cucchiara said she was a much loved part of the family, particularly because of the way she had come to them.
“She was a part of the family,” he said.
“The kids are devastated.”
Mr Cucchiara said he arrived home to find Lucky in the gutter and the driver nowhere to be seen.
“She was in the gutter beside the road,’ he said.
“Nine times out of 10 it’s not the driver’s fault but it would have been nice to have stopped.”
On Friday 11 February, Mr Cucchiara arrived home from work and could hear cat noises from inside the garage.
After an extensive search, and some tuna and milk, the tiny kitten emerged from a small cavity near the wheel of the car.
After Lucky spent eight days at the Keysborough animal shelter, the Cucchiara family decided to adopt her.
At the time Mrs Cucchiara said the family was thrilled to have Lucky.
“I find it just astonishing that such a tiny little thing could survive such an experience,” she told the Star in February.
“We don’t know why she came to us, but we are sure freaked out.”
Mr Cucchiara said the family was trying to get Lucky used to the outdoors and had been letting her out during the day and bringing her inside at nightfall.
