Mr Rogers is flying to New York this Friday to run the famous New York marathon as part of the Australian World Vision team on 6 November.
“I was on a plane flying back to Australia about five years ago and I made a list of the things I most wanted to do in my life,” he said.
“This was the top of my list so I have been thinking about it for five years.”
Although Mr Rogers said the marathon is extremely difficult, he hasn’t been training as much as he should.
“I haven’t been training hard enough really. I’ve done 30 kilometres so I’ll have to see how I go,” he said.
“I’ll have my name on the back of my shirt so if I slow down too much I hope people will yell out. There will be too much moral pressure to stop.”
The New York marathon kicks off on Staten Island before taking a scenic route through the city to finish in Central Park, 42 kilometres away from the starting line.
Mr Rogers’ initial fundraising target was $2000 but the total is heading towards $4000.
“Kids at the school come up and give me 10 cents or 20 cents. They’re inspired by it and hopefully in their lives they’ll get out and do things like this as well,” he said.
“It’s great because when you think what that will buy in India or Thailand, it goes so far.”
Mr Rogers is being sponsored per kilometre of the run, which will go to World Vision’s SEE Solutions program, providing ‘seed’ funding for loans to entrepreneurs in remote and poor villages in Asia.
“Running with World Vision means the run has got purpose,” he said.
“It’s an interesting project because this one is like an eternal gift and keeps rolling on and rolling on.”
