RHIANNON (Annie) Woodsell started an annual tradition that her family hopes to continue for years to come.
After taking part in the Greater Dandenong Relay for Life in 2010, while in remission from lung cancer, she passed away only weeks before the 2011 event.
Last year there were nine teams who relayed in Annie’s memory and this year the numbers haven’t fallen.
Her mother Jen Woodsell says the relay is not a sad day, it is a celebration.
“We treat it as a big party. It’s like a reward for all the fund-raising during the year,” she said.
“It’s at the end and it is a chance to kick back and just remember.”
More than 100 people, in nine teams, will walk this May in memory of Annie at the Greater Dandenong relay, even though the family is from Nunawading.
Ms Woodsell said it was always very touching so many people wanted to continue Annie’s memory.
“We have amazing support from people who knew and loved Annie and just as many who never met her but have been moved by her story and want to help in any way they can,” she said.
But the day is not all about Annie, Ms Woodsell said.
“Because of our journey we still know a lot of kids that are battling,” she said.
“The relay shows that you’re not alone and not the only person on the journey and other people have been there and survived.”
The Relay for Life is an annual event, which sees teams of 10 to 15 keeping a baton moving in a 24-hour relay.
Each team undertakes fund-raising and all proceeds raised go to Cancer Council Victoria.
The Greater Dandenong Relay for Life will be held at Sandown Park Greyhound Track in Springvale on 26 and 27 May.
