A BROTHER and sister duo hopes a Victorian retail first will net new customers at Dandenong Market.
Third generation fishmongers Dimitri and Adriana Ganotis have opened Hellenic Seafood, specialising in fresh, whole Australian fish.
They’ll have everything from four-kilogram snappers and salmon down to sardines and silver whiting.
And they’ll be on show in large granite ice wells – the first retail outlet in Victoria to do so.
“They’re like the ones that are in the Sydney fish market,” Adriana said.
“Everything’s nice and open and everything’s on ice.
“Visually it’s a lot more appealing.
“It’s a little bit more interactive with the customers.
“We wanted a point of difference and something that looked a bit more traditional.”
Adriana said fresh fillets cut in-store, King Island crayfish, Queensland prawns and oysters shucked in-store would also be on offer.
“Nothing’s frozen. Everything comes fresh to us,” she said.
“A lot of it is sustainably sourced as well. We try to get the highest quality we can.
“It’s something we’ve got a bit of a reputation for.”
That reputation comes from family business O’Psaras on Portman in Oakleigh.
“We worked together at the Oakleigh store as well, but it will be the first time we’ve worked together full time,” Adriana said of starting the stall with Dimitri.
“We argue a lot. We’ll see how that goes!
“He just finished up high school and I just finished up my uni degree.
“Mum and dad will be around on the weekends, as well.
“There is a saying that we Greeks have salty blood due to our love of the sea and the bounty it offers, and I can certainly say that’s true for myself and my family.”
The Greek seaside-village themed stall features decking floors to make visitors feel like they’ve stepped onto a pier and oyster shell tiles and sparkling glass to represent the Mediterranean Sea.
Adriana said she was excited to welcome Dandenong Market.
“It’s got some atmosphere and culture to it that we really love,” she said.
The stall joins Schwarze Seafood and Marmara Seafood in the meat, fish and deli hall.
