School of rock at Athol Road

By DAVID SCHOUT

ATHOL Road Primary School’s band has come a long way since forming just last year.

Its members have transformed from a fresh-faced bunch – some with
no musical experience – into polished performers who have recently
released their own song.

Performing arts teacher Megan Lutz says she has been “blown away” by the passion of the nine band members, aged 11 and 12.

“They are just as good as many of the adult bands I hear,” she said.

The band’s song, Two Peas in a Pod, is about a lonely girl (lead singer Celestine) who, in the search for company, finally finds a friend (co-singer Tony).

Their video has been uploaded to YouTube and submitted in the
Wakakirri Creative Arts Challenge, a national primary school competition
for the arts.
