SPRINGVALE South school students have penned their own tune about finding a special friendship.
The Athol Road Primary School Band wrote Two Peas in a Pod with performing arts teacher Megan Lutz and have entered it into Creative Arts Organisation song writing competition, Wakakirri.
“They usually do covers of songs,” Ms Lutz said.
“I thought it was a good idea to get them writing their own songs.
“The students wanted to do a song about friendship.”
The tune is about the band’s two lead singers, a boy and a girl.
“I tweaked it a little bit and gave them assistance when they needed it,” Ms Lutz said.
They worked on it once a week for 10 weeks before recording and uploading a clip to You Tube.
“One of the singers checks every night to see how many hits we’ve got,” Ms Lutz said.
The Year 4, 5 and 6 students have been performing together for about two years.
“The band has achieved incredible highs over the past six months, performing songs up to standard of an adult band,” Ms Lutz said.
“That connection to the song – they’ve got that adult connection to it.
“If you didn’t see them, some people would think they were an adult band.”
What’s even more remarkable is most band members don’t have an instrument at home to practice on, so they’ve made progress with just one 45-minute class a week.
“The drummer doesn’t have a drum kit. He’s only learnt for about a year,” Ms Lutz said.
“It’s just amazing, the commitment and dedication from them.”
The eight-member outfit includes a drummer, keyboardist, percussionist, two singers, a bass player and three guitarists.
The band performs for the school and local community and is currently asking its schoolmates for a name.
The Wakakirri winner will be announced in September.
