UNWILLING to sit by and watch his friend succumb to the ravages of multiple sclerosis, Noble Park Secondary College student Enis Harbas laced up his running shoes and hit the road.

On August 17, Enis, 15, and his friend, Ornal Memedovski, 16, a student at Minaret College, will embark on a challenging 100km run from Warragul to Blackburn.

The pair will tackle the gruelling distance over two days and have dedicated the run to Enis’ sick friend.

“It really got bad and she started limping and everything,” he said. “It got to me.”

Multiple sclerosis is a chronic disease that affects the central nervous system and can interrupt the transmission of nerve impulses to the brain, spinal cord and optic nerves.

“Seeing others suffer from MS just hurts me inside because there’s no cure for it,” Ornal said. “For us, running 100km and trying to raise as much money as we can might help lives and might help them to find a cure for MS.”

To prepare for the run, Enis and Ornal have been training regularly at In2Fitness gym in Noble Park to improve their core strength and fitness. On July 1, the two friends ran 20 kilometres, their longest effort so far.

“These school holidays, we just trained flat out, everyday,” Ornal said. “I reckon we’ll make it. It’s all about mental strength.”

Enis agreed: “We’ve got people supporting us from every angle. Our parents, our family members, they’re all proud of us. We can make a difference. We can raise money and plus inform people what MS is and what they can do to help.”
