Merle Mitchell

Springvale stalwart and Enterprise Migrant Hostel champion.

THE Spirit of Enterprise group welcomes the merger of the Dandenong Journal and the Star and looks forward to a continuing positive working relationship with the new entity.
Both papers have been very interested in the Enterprise Project since its inception in 2008, when a large exhibition was prepared for the Melbourne Immigration Museum, where it stayed for five months, later moving to the Springvale Historical Society for a further three months.
The exhibition documented the history of the Enterprise Migrant Hostel in Springvale, the warm welcome the council and the community gave to the residents and the innovative settlement programs that were developed, many of which continue today.
Publicity in the both papers enabled much of the material to be gathered.
Important developments since then have included a website, www.enterprisehostel.org, the naming of a new rose, the Enterprise Rose, the installation of a beautiful rose garden and glass sculpture on the old Enterprise site, a trail of sites significant to the successful settlement of those arriving as refugees or migrants.
A new website is now being developed. It will include these activities and will keep people informed about new developments.
We are excited about the proposed new library and civic centre in Springvale and believe that with creative design, this site could reflect our rich history of the vision and achievements of the past, which led to our harmonious community, and provide a vision for the future.
If the design of the new buildings and open space give us a unique architectural development of national and international significance, increased tourism will be encouraged and future generations can continue to celebrate Springvale’s cultural journey.
For further information contact Merle Mitchell on 9546 5255.
Local papers are an important source of information for people in our community. We look forward to the newly merged papers continuing to tell the Spirit of Enterprise story for us.
