Old cop shop, court burn in arson spree

By CASEY NEILL

SPRINGVALE’S former police station and court house were torched during an arson spree last night.
Greater Dandenong CIU detectives are interviewing a 50-year-old Springvale man over the string of fires, the first in the adjoining vacant buildings in Royal Avenue about 9.30pm on 17 February.
Detective Senior Constable Ash Penry said the firebug pushed rubbish bins against the buildings and set the contents alight.
The old police station has extensive damage to its front and roof and there is scorching damage to the front of the old courthouse.
A fire at the rear of adjoining businesses in Springvale Road followed about 10.20pm, and another in Warwick Avenue about 10.35pm.
Dog Squad and uniform members arrested a man in nearby Kintore Street about 10.50pm.
He remains in custody, assisting police with their inquiries.
Call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 with any information about the blazes.
