THE teaching went both ways at Yarraman Oaks Primary on Tuesday, with the students enlightening their principal for the day Councillor Roz Blades on all things school related.
With their regular principal away, the City of Greater Dandenong’s Ms Blades took on the top job for one day to educate the primary school students on her other job as a councillor.
“I do this every year and have visited many schools – it’s a great way to teach them about what I do, what the City of Greater Dandenong has to offer them and how the council deals with the state and federal governments,” Ms Blades said.
After getting her hair done, colouring in, listening to the school’s choir and reading on beanbags in the new school building, Ms Blades was given a task of her own from the students.
“They are making their own joke book and are trying to collect 1000 jokes, so I am emailing them back some,” she said.
After much discussion, Ms Blades was asked for a special favour from some eager students.
“The students have their own vegie patch and chooks at school and would like to learn more about recycling so I was asked to organise someone to speak to them about the best ways to go about recycling,” Ms Blades explained.
A positive experience for everyone, Ms Blades hopes the visit will help connect the children’s families with the council.
“It’s fantastic to mix with the school community and hopefully families will feel more comfortable contacting the council as well,” she said.
