Seal broken on 42 years of history

COINS, magazines, toys and wine had been sealed away beneath the Dandenong Library for 42 years.
Mayor Sean O’Reilly, Councillor Heang Tak and former Dandenong mayors Ian McDonald and Frank Holohan on Monday 12 October opened the time capsule buried to mark Dandenong’s centenary on 2 August, 1973.
Workers found the two cylinders while demolishing the old library.
They contained official council paperwork, wine, a toy Rolls Royce, a children’s comic, postage stamps and coins from 1973.
Two films on spools record celebrations held in Dandenong from February to May 1973 and views of Dandenong.
TV Magazine and a copy of Cleo showcased ‘70s trends, and six coloured photographs and a map captured the Dandenong of the day.
Cr O’Reilly said he’d definitely include Australia Post’s Dandy Pig commemorative stamp in a time capsule for today.
