Keysborough’s newest sports pavilion is set to be named after a late City of Springvale CEO.
Greater Dandenong councillors endorsed the name Ian Tatterson Pavilion at their Monday 11 September council meeting.
The public will have 30 days to comment on the proposal.
The pavilion is part of an $11.6 million project and is due to be completed on Thursday 28 September.
Councillor Roz Blades said Mr Tatterson was the CEO when the council bought the Cheltenham Road land for what is now Tatterson Park in the late 1980s.
“The Federal Government bypassed State Government and came straight to local councils with funding for shovel-ready projects,” she said.
“It had to be built within five to six months. We had Springers ready to build with this funding.
“Springers was the name adopted after a suggestion from a senior officer at the time.”
Mr Tatterson was CEO from 1984 until his death in a plane crash in June 1992.
Environmental health officer Desmond Wirtanen was flying the light aircraft to the Ouyen Cup.
The pavilion project received funding from the federal, state and local governments, and also included a synthetic soccer sports ground.
“It is a good feeling for me as a local representative to have come full circle with this,” Cr Blades said.
“The site is getting to be every bit as fantastic as we all dreamed it would be.”
