Aussie-Rules football took a starring role at a star-studded Naidoc Week ceremony at Lighthouse Christian College on 19 July.

As part of a special assembly, Essendon VFLW player Courtney Ugle spoke inspiringly of moving to Melbourne to play football.

She told of her and her siblings’ determination and perseverence, and how far they had come.

St Kilda Football Club also presented the school with a playing jumper signed by the team and an indigenous jumped signed by star Jade Gresham.

Marbee Williams and Brent Watkins from the Boon Wurrung Foundation presented Welcome to Country and the flag-raising ceremony and performed for the assembly.

Renae White, a Torres Strait Islander descendent, spoke of her sister’s paintings.

The event paid special tribute to the active roles played by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women.
