SFL: ‘Pathetic’ Demons routed

SPRINGVALE Districts coach Clint Einsiedel has described his side’s loss to rival Oakleigh District as “pathetic” after the Demons fell to a 93-point defeat at Princes Highway Reserve, Oakleigh, on Saturday.

Going into the match the highly rated Demons were expected to go toe to toe with a home side that has undergone key changes under new coach Steven Wright leading into the Southern Football League division 2 season.

But that close match-up was blown out of the water in the second half. District went from leading by 20 points at half-time to clock up 14 goals to one and storm to victory.

District ran rampant, finding every way to goal with Sasha Danilovic (five goals) and Paul Fermanis (three goals) leading the way.

Justin Isaac, Joe Sibilia, John Margetis, Jason Thexton and Elvis Alimovski (two goals each) all proved dangerous. Even fleet-footed rover Khaled Kandakji joined in the action, kicking a running goal and celebrating with vigour.

Einsiedel refused to blame the absence of a few senior players for the loss and deemed such a performance unacceptable. “We were right in the game at half time. I mean being 20 points down we were a red hot chance of winning.

“Then to put on a pathetic performance like that is unacceptable. You can’t let a side kick 13 or 14 goals on you in a half. We didn’t show any fight or any pride in the jumper, particularly in the last term.”

Matthew Thompson, Chris Koenings, Kris Thompson, Shannon Brown and Gavin Vassallo were named best players for the Demons.

Einsiedel said his side has to show major improvement when it faces East Malvern at Springvale Reserve this Saturday. “Our form was hard to judge following our first two games. We can’t bring this kind of performance to the table again.”

The day was even worse for the Demons when David Ford was red-carded in the third term after a confrontation with an Oakleigh District player.

Einsiedel said Ford was also reported in the incident and is likely to face the SFL tribunal this week.
