Saigon Square a Greater Dandenong poll issue

Four Vietnamese candidates are making the Saigon Square-naming controversy a campaign issue in next month’s Greater Dandenong Council election.

Incumbent councillor Loi Truong, Minh Tran, Trang Tran and Nhan Huynh nominated as candidates in separate wards.

Their campaign organiser Trung Doan said their aim was not to unseat the “six arrogant councillors’’ who voted down Saigon Square as the name of a public space in Springvale in March. “We don’t have the ability to unseat them. By having their votes reduced, the people will tell them what they think about them.’

Other early nominees included mayor Youhorn Chea, sitting councillors Angela Long, Jim Memeti and Roz Blades, Noble Park Community Centre manager Nina Springle and prominent campaigners Matthew Kirwan and John Gulzari.

See a report on the final list of candidates elsewhere on this site.
