COMMUNITY groups are banding together to help Shawland Caravan Park’s residents.
Last week, the Dandenong branch of Club Assist donated a fridge into the communal laundry. It will be used to chill donated milk, fruit and other perishable food donated weekly by Avocare and delivered by members of Dandenong Christian Reformed Church.
The food was a lifeline for some residents who wouldn’t otherwise eat much, park manager Elizabeth Miller said. “There are kids here that you can see don’t have breakfast and lunch.”
It’s the first donation made by the newly-formed Club Assist Relief Effort.
Club Assist’s Rachel Thompson said there were plans for Christmas toy drives and to help at Avocare’s food van that served free dinners at Dandenong Plaza on Wednesdays.
“We were inspired by [Avocare’s director] Trish Keilty. We asked her what are some of the quick things we can do to help? She straight away mentioned the caravan park.”
Ms Keilty is part of a committee, including homelessness agency WAYSS and mental health service ERHMA, banding together to improve the residents’ lives. “We can’t let them fall through the cracks.”
