THE Lyndale Pumas are back at their biting best after thrashing Canterbury by 49 points at Barry Powell Reserve in their Southern Football League Division Two match on Saturday.
Canterbury led narrowly at quarter and half-time, but a crucial goal kicked by star recruit Russell Weeding early in the third quarter sparked the Pumas into action.
After Lyndale hit the lead it kicked clear and dominated the last quarter to register the percentage-boosting win.
Pumas goal-kicking machine Matt Caples booted eight, while Weeding and Brett Colbert added three each.
Assistant coach Paul Wilson said it was always a good feeling to put the first premiership points on the board.
“It’s a monkey off our backs and it was a good win,” he said.
“It has given us a great launching pad for the rest of the season.”
Weeding’s great start to the year is made even more impressive considering he has made the jump from Division Three to the Division Two this year.
Wilson described Weeding as a great addition to the side.
“The senior coach, Danny Scott, has built a great list and Weeding slips into it perfectly. He plays a role up forward,” he said.
The Pumas have the chance to kick themselves into the top four on Saturday when they host Oakleigh Districts.
