Centre may close

– Shaun Inguanzo
NOBLE Park’s leading drug and alcohol addiction support service may be on the brink of closing down.
Sources close to Star have revealed the Cyrene Centre is struggling to find the funding it needs to maintain rent at its shopfront in Douglas Street.
The vital support service, which counsels families and their members affected by drugs or alcohol, is part of the Mary of the Cross Centre in Melbourne, and was established with the help of the local Catholic deanery.
The centre received $40,000 from the City of Greater Dandenong this financial year for a community development worker, but was rejected $30,000 which it needs to operate the shopfront.
The council’s grants panel commented in a document revealed to the public last month that the funds were a State Government responsibility.
