AFTER a promising start for the Dandenong-based Supercheap Auto Racing team, its number one Commodore driven by four-time Bathurst champ Greg Murphy and Cameron McConville crashed late in the race after McConville struck oil over Skyline and hit the wall heavily.
Nathan Pretty and Paul Weel finished a fine eighth after starting last on the grid after Weel crashed the car in practice and the team elected to miss qualifying.
Both Pretty and Weel had spins during the race, while. much to the surprise of the team and everyone else, Pretty also received a drive-through penalty for his part in an incident which saw Team Kiwi’s Paul Radisich crash heavily.
The result was Weel’s equal best Bathurst finish, while it was Pretty’s fifth top 10 Bathurst finish in the past six years in what was his ninth start in the race.
“I hate to use a cliché, but that’s motor racing, as they say,” Murphy said.
“We had a strong run early and led for some time.
“While we may not have had the pace to run with (winner) Lowndes and (runners-up) the Kellys at the end, we should have had enough to finish on the podium.
“It’s a real shame for the team behind Cam and I who have worked so hard all year only to have luck go against them.
“They deserved better, they deserved a result.”
