Children at Ponilala reading a letter from students at their ‘friendship school’, St Paul Apostle South Children at Ponilala reading a letter from students at their ‘friendship school’, St Paul Apostle South

A GAME of cards will help an East Timorese village build new facilities – and all residents have to do is enjoy the show.
The Gin Game starring Julia Blake and Terry Norris will be playing at the Drum Theatre and Town Hall on Tuesday 24 October at 8pm.
The play will be a Rotary Club of Dandenong East charity event, with all proceeds from ticket sales going towards an effort by Mission Australia and Friends of Ermera to help build a new school in Ermera, East Timor.
Friends of Ermera has agreed to build a junior high school in the town of Ponilala and a primary school in the town of Fatubessi.
Local residents will pitch in for non-technical labour with the rest of the labour and materials funded by money raised in charity events such as The Gin Game.
According to Friends of Ermera, both schools are presently operating in temporary buildings without water or toilet facilities.
The Gin Game promises to be an entertaining night out.
The play takes the audience into the battle of wits that erupts over an innocent game of cards between retirement home residents Fonsia (Julie Blake) and Weller (Terry Norris).
The card game can be seen as a metaphor for their lives – although Fonsia is lucky at cards, she has not been so lucky in love or life and Weller has obviously led a rather turbulent life in which the cards have been stacked against him.
The play is both comical and touching.
It was written by American playwright DL Coburn, and first performed on Broadway in 1979.
To have an enjoyable night out while raising funds for a worthy project, book your tickets to The Gin Game by contacting the Drum Theatre Box Office on 9711 6666.
